Thinking of joining them? Here are a dozen reasons you should.

By Chris Baskind of Lighter Footstep

It’s Bike to Work Week, and we’re continuing our look at smart ways to start saddling up and using bicycles for real transportation.

At Lighter Footstep, we’ve always taken the greenness of bike transport as a given. But if you’re just getting started — or perhaps trying to convince an employer that bicycle commuting is a good thing — we’re rounded up a dozen reasons to leave that car in the driveway and start covering pavement on two wheels. Let’s ride!

1. It’s easier to finance a new bicycle than a new car. Thanks to the recession, auto loans are hard to find these days — even if you have good credit. But for the price of a single car payment, you can buy a well-made bicycle that should outlast most cars. Add a few hundred dollars more for rain gear, lights, and accessories, and you have all-weather, anytime transportation.

2. A bicycle has a tiny manufacturing footprint when compared to a car. All manufactured goods have environmental impact, but bicycles can be produced for a fraction of the materials, energy, and shipping costs of a car.

3. Bicycles produce no meaningful pollution when in operation. Bikes don’t have tailpipes belching poisonous fumes into the atmosphere. They also eliminate the oil, fuel, and hydraulic fluids dripped by automobiles onto the road surface — which means less toxic runoff into local waterways.

4. Bikes save taxpayers money by reducing road wear. A twenty pound bicycle is a lot less rough on the pavement than a two-ton sedan. Every bicycle on the road amounts to money saved patching potholes and resurfacing city streets.

5. Bicycles are an effective alternative to a second car. Perhaps you’re not in a position to adopt a bicycle as primary transportation. But bikes make great second vehicles. You can literally save thousands of dollars per year using a bicycle for workday commuting and weekend errands in households which might otherwise be forced to maintain two cars.

6. Using a bike for transportation can help you lose weight and improve your overall health. The health benefits of regular aerobic exercise are well known. Depending on your riding style and local road conditions, you could easily burn 600 calories an hour through brisk cycling. Most bike commuters report losing 15 to 20 pounds during their first year in the saddle without changing their eating habits.

7. You can store a dozen bicycles in a single automobile-sized parking place. Parking lots have enormous environmental and financial impact, particularly in urbanized areas. The more bikes you can get on the road, the fewer parking spaces you need to build.

8. Bicycles don’t burn gasoline. Fuel is cheap compared to last year, and the economic downturn is likely to keep a lid on petroleum demand for a while. But we’re not producing any more oil today than we were when it was more than $100 a barrel. A healthy bike culture will help ease pressure on supply once demand returns.

9. Bicycling may be faster and more efficient than taking a car. We’re not talking about the crazy — and illegal — antics of New York bicycle messengers. But bikes are often faster than cars in urban areas, especially when city designers have set aside proper bike lanes. There’s nothing more satisfying as a bicycle commuter than breezing past a long line of gridlocked traffic.

10. Bikes cost much less to maintain and operate than automobiles. You’ll never throw a rod on a bicycle, and dropping a transmission on a bike usually means replacing a bent derailleur hanger or worn-out chain. Bicycles do require service, but you can learn to perform most of it yourself. Even if you have a shop do things for you, costs will be trivial compared to a car.

11. Bicycles provide mobility for those who may not qualify or afford to drive. Not everyone can get a driver’s license (or wants one), and the cost of purchasing, insuring, and maintaining a car is out of reach for a lot of people. Almost everyone can afford some sort of bike. Other than walking, bicycles are the most cost effective transportation on the planet.

12. Studies show that bicycle commuters are healthier, more productive, and require less time-off at work. This is why most enlightened employers are eager to accommodate commuting cyclists. Healthy workers are better workers — and that’s good for the bottom line. Bikes are smart business.

So there are twelve reasons to dust-off that bicycle in your garage in time for Bike to Work Day. Can you think of others? You’ll also find out why folks are truly pleased to see him as he gathers the neighborhood’s recyclables!
10 minutes, directed by Shyla Lee.

Every Third Bite This playful and colorful excursion honors bees, beekeepers and the ancient dance between the two. From the rooftops of New York City to abandoned lots in Chicago, meet bee activists in urban and rural places who are keeping wild bees and meanwhile producing the best tasting honey in the world. You’ll learn to celebrate the fact that every third bite you consume is pollinated by a bee and that this shrinking population of busy workers is irreplaceable. This film is produced by an unusual group, The Meerkat Media Arts Collective out of Brooklyn, New York, comprised of filmmakers and artists who believe in the spirit of collaboration and cooperation.
9 minutes, directed by Meerkat Media Arts Collective.

The Greening of Southie From the co-producers that brought us King Corn, Ian Cheney and Curt Ellis now share a dynamic portrait of the future of green building in America. If you live in the Northern Hemisphere, the days are already getting shorter -- by almost two minutes each day, depending on your latitude.
It all adds up. This time next month, most commuters will be returning home by twilight. Summer activities will be at an end, and we'll all be spending more time indoors.
Lighting typically represents about 25% of a home's overall energy use. A 1997 study found, perhaps unsurprisingly, that homes use 50% more power for lighting in the darker months than the rest of the year. This means that making adjustments now can payoff both in lower annual energy bills and in a reduced environmental footprint for your household.
Ready to lighten your autumn lighting needs? Here are three ideas to get you started:

Convert your fixtures to CFLs
We've written extensively about Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs (CFLs) in the past, and there's no shortage of documentation showing their energy saving value. If you've not already re-lamped your fixtures, a full complement of CFLs could easily reduce your lighting power needs by 60%. A couple of things to keep in mind: CFLs work differently than their incandescent counterparts, so do your homework before choosing CFL bulbs appropriate for your household. And since CFLs contain a small amount of mercury, they shouldn't be tossed out with the regular trash. Learn how to properly dispose of your old CFLs before it's time to retire your first expended bulb.

Install motion detector switches wherever practical
Motion detectors are widely used to regulate outdoor security lighting. But they're also useful indoors. Hall and bedroom fixtures, for instance, lend themselves well to on-demand use. Walk into a dark room -- the lights turn on, without fumbling for the switch. More importantly, they turn off when you leave. Inexpensive motion detector switches are available at most hardware stores and home centers. They're both productive energy managers and a real convenience item.

Be aware of your energy habits
Your parent were right: turn off that light when you're done with it. Sitting down to watch TV? Take a moment to walk around and switch-off the lights you don't need. It's possible to trim 10-15% of your lighting needs just by being more conscious of bulbs burning in storage areas and unoccupied rooms. It only takes a second to save.
(End of Article)

More resources:

CFLs: What About Mercury? by Joyanna Laughlin
Energy-Saving Light Bulbs Q&A by Joyanna Laughlin

Attention: These are articles from the GAIAM Community. Kilimanjaro, trekked through the Amazon rainforest and marveled at the more than 50 species of lemurs on Madagascar. But increasingly, these and other ecological wonderlands are being threatened by environmental degradation — everything from global warming to deforestation to simple human neglect.
Eco-conscious travelers who want to see these places before they disappear often face a dilemma: Will their desire to leave a physical footprint result in a carbon footprint that will speed up the demise of these incredible and fragile destinations?
Not if those travelers embrace eco-tourism, says Matt Kareus, director of marketing for Boulder, Colo.-based eco-travel company Natural Habitat Adventures. “The main benefit of eco-tourism is that it offers a sustainable source of income to the people who live and work in endangered places,” says Kareus.
Locals ranging from tour guides to hotel maids benefit from eco-travel, Kareus points out, because eco-travel creates jobs that help keep locals from having to work for companies or industries that contribute to the degradation of their ecologically sensitive homeland.
Here’s a look at five global destinations in peril, plus links to sites where you can help ensure their preservation — whether through eco-tourism or simply a donation to programs that protect and restore them.

1. South American rainforests
South America is home to the Amazon and Atlantic rainforests, both victims of deforestation.
The Atlantic Forest once spanned about 330 million acres in Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, according to the Nature Conservancy. The rainforest, which includes the popular tourist destination Iguazu Falls, the largest waterfalls in the world, is home to 20,000 plant species and almost 950 types of birds.
Only 7 percent of the Atlantic Forest remains today in the wake of deforestation resulting from the growth of commercial sugarcane, coffee and soybean plantations.
But Conservation International reports that the Atlantic Forest region has been “the cradle of the Brazilian environmental movement,” with about 9.6 million acres under government protection. Another 2.8 million acres are under private protection in Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay.
The Atlantic Forest Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund also makes grants to assist landowners in sustainable management, and supports small projects dealing with biodiversity conservation.
The 2.3-million-square-mile Amazon rainforest, which covers 40 percent of the continent and is home to more than 300,000 plant species, faces an ecological crisis but isn’t as imperiled as the Atlantic Forest.
According to Greenpeace, 15 percent of the Amazon rainforest has been destroyed, mainly by logging, mining and industrial agriculture. Another 1,700 square miles of the Ecuadorian portion of the rainforest is the subject of a $6 billion lawsuit against Chevron for allegedly dumping more than 18 billion gallons of toxic waste into it.
Greenpeace reports that about 1 percent of the Amazon rainforest is under Brazilian government protection through Extravist Reserves, but one of the most effective ways to help protect the Amazon is by buying only timber certified by the Forest Stewardship Council as having been harvested sustainably.

2. Everglades National Park
This 1.5-million-acre area in Florida boasts coral reefs, cypress swamps, panthers and manatees, and is the only place in the world where alligators and crocodiles co-exist.
According to the National Parks Conservation Association, since 1934, the Everglades has lost half its size and 90 percent of its wading bird populations, mainly because of development and pollution. Global warming is a serious factor in future Everglades erosion — the EPA predicts that the sea around Florida will rise 5 inches in the next 25 years, threatening the wide ring of mangroves that protects the freshwater Everglades from the seawater-filled Florida Bay and endangering thousands of species that can survive only in fresh water.
A massive federal, national and local relief effort is underway. NPCA reports that the Everglades Restoration Plan is expected to pour at least $8 billion into Everglades ecosystem restoration during the next 30 years.

3. Antarctica and the Arctic
Scientists are scrambling to predict how climate change will affect the polar ice caps that make up the Antarctic and Arctic, and how global warming might affect the polar bears, caribou, snowy owls and other species that call this frozen habitat home.
A new study by the British Antarctic Survey notes that the Antarctic Peninsula has undergone some of the fastest warming on Earth — nearly 37 degrees over the last 50 years.
The United Nations reports that the 20,000 polar bears that range across the Arctic are having to change their hunting patterns as the ice retreats, leaving fewer areas where they can hunt, and the bears are becoming smaller. The World Conservation Union predicts that the Earth’s polar bear population could drop 30 percent in the next 30 to 50 years.
There are a few efforts underway to limit global warming’s impact on the Arctic and save the native species. The U.N. Development Programme is one of them, working with local communities to better manage their ecosystems and protect the areas where polar bears live.

4. Madagascar
The fourth-largest island on Earth is astonishingly biodiverse. This tropical island off the southeast coast of Africa is home to eight plant families, four bird families and five primate families found nowhere else on Earth.
Madagascar is also home to two-thirds of the world’s chameleons, 50 species of lemur and the world’s most endangered tortoise, according to the World Wildlife Foundation. But inappropriate agricultural methods have almost completely deforested the central plateau of Madagascar, and Conservation International estimates only about 17 percent of the island’s original vegetation remains. In addition, according to WWF, rising sea levels caused by global warming are affecting the coral reef ecosystem around the island, along with the migration routes of turtles and whales.
Until recently, Madagascar’s rapidly growing population had little incentive to preserve its natural resources. But the government has launched a five-year environmental action plan, establishing national parks and nature reserves, and is asking for worldwide funding assistance. In addition, Conservation International has launched a $1 million program to support eco-tourism in Madagascar.

5. Mt. Kilimanjaro
The glaciers on this 19,340-foot peak in Tanzania could be completely gone in 10 years, according to a variety of scientists who have studied Mt. Kilimanjaro. New research shows that climate change is the likely culprit for the melting ice caps, which have eroded from 12.5 square miles in 1889 to 1.5 square miles in 2003.
A 2004 University of Massachusetts study found that deforestation created less moisture in the atmosphere around Mt. Kilimanjaro, contributing to reduced cloud cover and precipitation and increased solar radiation — which likely contribute to glacial evaporation, notes another study by European and American researchers.
Though many researchers assert that little can be done to reverse the process, a Jane Goodall Institute program called Roots & Shoots is working to prove them wrong. The group’s new reforestation effort in Tanzania, called ReBirth the Earth, focuses on tree planting in the Mt. Kilimanjaro region and provides field training for 100,000 area students. The youngsters learn about alternatives to tree-cutting practices, managing water retention, and establishing nurseries of native-species trees.

Other ways to help save endangered places
While giving directly to organizations that support conservation in these ecologically sensitive areas is an excellent way to ensure that their wonders remain for future generations, there are also other things you can do to travel sustainably. Brian Mullis, president of Sustainable Travel International, a nonprofit education group based in Boulder, Colo., offers the following suggestions:

> Stay at eco-lodges or hotels that use renewable energy, serve locally sourced food or make a point of employing locals. Check out greenhotels.com, greenstop.net, responsibletravel.com or ecotourism.org to find eco-friendly lodging.
> Offset the emissions from your plane, train, bus or car by either choosing a carbon-neutral travel guide company or buying carbon credits. You can calculate how much your air miles are costing the planet at the Natural Habitat website.
> Rent a hybrid car; many agencies now offer them.
> Consider a volunteer vacation that allows you to work on conservation projects. Think of it as nature's little hint to get composting.
Fall is just around the corner -- and with it, an ample supply of carbon-rich leaves to stock your compost pile. Rather than sending them to the landfill, why not set them aside to improve next season's soil?
Leaves count as "brown" bulk in a compost heap. They're half the equation: you'll need a roughly equal amount of nitrogen-bearing "greens," as well. Green material includes grass clippings and most forms of vegetable waste from your kitchen. Mix the two together with a little water, air, and sunshine, and you're set to improve next season's soil -- while reducing your household's output of solid waste.

Pulling it all together
Starting a compost heap can be as simple as layering brown and green materials and adding water. In practice, an enclosure is the best way to keep pets and pests out of your fresh compost, while maximizing the pile's efficiency. It can be as simple as a 3-by-3 foot mesh. Leave one side open or allow it to be removable so you can easily aerate the pile.

Wet is wonderful
Ideally, a compost heap should be kept about as wet as a wrung-out sponge. If you're building a new pile, you'll probably want to add a little water as you lay out your layers. How much you'll need to water the pile -- and how often -- will be determined by your local climate. Loosely covering your compost heap with a tarp or drop cloth might be sufficient to hold moisture. Dry areas will require more attention.

Turn, turn, turn
A healthy compost heap should smell earthy, not rank. Ammonia-like odors are usually a sign of anaerobic bacteria. You've got to turn your stack about once a week to make sure beneficial bacteria has enough air to grow. An old-fashioned pitchfork works just fine.

Commercial compost bins
Manufactured compost bins are a convenient alternative to the traditional pile. They're generally made of plastic -- often from recycled materials -- and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Some of the most popular rotate, which makes turning your pile an effortless task. Since they're closed, commercial bins are a good choice if you have problems with pets or pests plundering your compost. You'll also enjoy more control over the heap's moisture, which translates into quicker compost turnover.

Composting resources
Want to find out more? This is a brilliant system that finally delivers the traffic we all want for our blogs! And what is more - it is an incentive to visit other blogs daily, so you have the additional joy of reading great blogs on a daily base. You get credits for both - visiting and being visited!

AND NOW - fot the first time in history you get credits, too, for commenting! Entrecard has just announced partnership with SezWho:

"The objective is to make valuable contributions to others’ posts, and fast track your blog to success."
"The credits we give you per comment bridge the gap between your desire to comment and the effort required to actually leave a comment. It will serve as a daily reminder that you should be commenting on blogs that interest you. It will give you a push to go above and beyond your normal comment, and make the best comment you can. Exploring blogs in your niche, making valuable contributions to them, and forging new relationships should be a routine, not a rarity. After all, super-bloggers are made, not born."

Watch THIS VIDEO to see exactly what SezWho does.

How to join

Step 1. Join Entrecard: just click on the E-widget in my sidebar where it says: Get One (= an EntreCard). It's easy, it's FREE and it works.
Step 2. Register with SezWho via Entrecard Dashboard
Step 3: Installing SezWho on your blog
Step 4: Rating Comments and Earning Credits

Once SezWho is installed on your blog, and you’ve registered your account with Entrecard (see Step 2), you will now start earning credits when you leave comments, and others will earn credits when they comment on your blog, dramatically increasing the frequency with which your blog gets commented.

Now I think this is really "a bold move in blogging history"!

I have installed SezWho on all my blogs so you can now use the feature right here if you want.
But I will not conceal from you that there are of course different opinions on that. There is already a great debate underway whether this "getting paid" for comments is a good thing ot not!

Read JoeTech versus Steven Humour

What is your point? It was an overwhelming success, with more than 20.000 blogs participating! Since no one can read 20.000 posts, I have chosen some for you to read here. My aim is to make the whole action more sustainable, so I recycle these posts, in order to not waste these precious contributions that are well worth reading long after Blog Action Day!

Come with me on a journey and see how beautiful our planet is - and how it suffers.

All posts were written on October 15 th - in honor of The Environment. Truly "A Day On Earth".

emil petru from Romania (in Romanian)
blogs about Copsa Mica (in English): "Copsa Mica is an industrial town located in the center of Romania. It is the blackest town in the world and the most polluted town in Europe." See the really frightening photos and read the horrible facts. Nobody has commented on this post yet, I think everybody reading this should go and say something to Emil Petru. Don't leave the Romanians alone. You can also sign a petition, "STOP the pollution at Copsa Mica", the link is here:
Copsa Mica - Blog Action Day

Marie Sans Importance from France (in French)
Marie did not feel inspired on October 15th - so she just posted a collection of Environment links in French while waiting for inspiration - great resource for French speaking people. Also she chose Richie Havens' "Freedom - Motherless Child" as chanson du lundi (Monday Song) which I think is a very inspired choice for our planet Earth on Blog Action Day! Enjoy the Woodstock feel.
blog action day - des liens en attendant

Ninetynine Problems from Nepal (in English)
Deelip Khanal has posted about a journey of his to a place called Ghorepani, close to the Himalaya, and he stands in awe of the beauty this place has. "It’s fairly common to hear the phrase “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle". ... I’d propose taking this list a step further. Reduction is a good option, but even better is complete elimination. I guess that in a way, it’s the ultimate reduction." Go to his post and enjoy his teachings. He is a good teacher, I can assure you!
Elimination

World of Mo from Germany (in German)
Mo talks about the problems bio fuel (fuel from food plants) like Bio Ethanol are causing for Third World Countries: while carrying great hopes for the fight against Global Warming they drastically reduce the means in the fight against hunger. Food plants are replaced by fuel plants because they yield higher prices. Food becomes less available and more expensive in consequence. Mo suggests hydrogen as fuel of the future, but that is a long way to go ... Very knowledgeable, enlightening and definitely biased in the fight fuel contra food.
Blog Action Day: Biokraftstoffe – Klimaschutz für die erste auf Kosten der dritten Welt?

zimmik.dk from Denmark (in Danish)
zimmik.dk, 16 year old blogger from Denmark, blogs about Blackle, the "Black Google", and recommends using it, as a black screen is saving energy! Every time you use toxic sprays and man-made abrasive solutions, you risk polluting the air inside your home. Fortunately, there are tons of household cleaners that you can make at home using all natural ingredients. Baking soda can be used as a natural abrasive to clean or deodorize anything. It also works well on stains. Lemon juice is a great bleach alternative, and can cut through grease or remove stains. Finally, vinegar mixed with salt makes the perfect all-purpose cleaner.

Oven Cleaners

Store bought oven cleaners are extremely harsh. The fumes can make you pass out, and if you get the cleaner on your skin it burns painfully. A natural oven cleaner is much nicer to use. You can create your own at home by using ¼ cup baking soda, 2 tablespoons of salt, and enough hot water to make a paste out of the other two ingredients.

Deodorizers

The next time you want to improve the smell of your home or deodorize a single space, avoid reaching for an aerosol spray can. You can achieve better results from natural products. Vinegar or baking soda in a cup will absorb and eliminate odors. If you want to add scent, try simmering orange rinds, lemon rinds, cloves, cinnamon sticks, or allspice in a pot of water. After an hour or two, your house will smell better, longer.

Buying Eco-Friendly Products

If you don't want to make your own household cleaning products or if you are worried about your house smelling like vinegar, you can buy eco-friendly products instead. Many of the companies that manufacture household cleaners are making an effort to go green and use natural products. There are also quite a few companies and websites that have cropped up recently to cater to eco-friendly individuals.

Before buying the harsh, toxic products that you have traditionally used to clean your home, try searching out more environmentally-friendly options. It will be better for your health and better for the world around you.

Karen Schweitzer contributes to http://HomeGuide123.com, an authority on everything home related. "We have a solar water heater and are replacing all our light bulbs with CF bulbs. We are conscious about reducing our car trips and take our bikes for short trips to the post office." -Kalalea

8. "About a month ago I bought a little 50cc scooter and tool all around town on it with my 5-year-old daughter. It gets more than 100 MPG in the city and costs about $5 to fill up an empty tank with super premium. I added a big basket on the back and I go grocery shopping, take her to gymnastics, visit the grandparents." -ScooterSister

9. "We recycle religiously and I bring stuff we can't recycle at home to drop-off centers for hard-to-recycle items." -BlueSky

10. "We always buy recycled paper products and cleaning products made by companies that are authentically environmentally responsible. I won't use products with toxic fumes anymore." -SuperMom

11. "My husband started riding the bus to work. Since he drives a truck this makes a big difference." -BlueSky

12. "I have sold my home (in a horrible market!) donated almost everything I own, bought a hybrid and will soon be moving to live in an intentional community that is in the early stages. Currently there is solar power already in place and a spring feeds three ponds." -neogirl710

13. "We try to support environmentally conscious and sustainable products and services." -Kalalea

14. "Most of my lights have CFL bulbs, my yard and garden are organic, I drive a hybrid, pay extra for green energy (wind and small hydro), try to keep the heat down and the AC off, walk when I can, and shop locally." -SuburbanTomboy

15. "We try to use less packaging. For a while we were putting Horizon's single-serving chocolate milks in our son's lunchbox, but that packaging is totally guilt inducing, so we just bought some small spill proof reusable plastic containers and we make chocolate milk in those and pack in his lunches." -SuperMom

16. "I bought a yurt which and plan to build a straw bale home in the future." -neogirl710

17. "I installed a surge protector on my microwave so that I can turn off all power to it when it's not in use, and now it's used as an expensive bread box." -SuburbanTomboy

18. "We try to get to the farmer's market several times each summer or we ask people we know to pick up produce for us when they go. We also get produce from my sister's garden." -BlueSky

19. "We recycle and compost. My son has a little neighborhood recycling pickup business. We don't have household pick up for recycling so we take in recycling for our neighbors, hopefully encouraging them to recycle more." -Kalalea

20. "We use CF bulbs whenever possible, unplug every single electric item in the house when it's not in use, and use our own grocery bags at as many local farmer's markets as we can find. My daughter is always asking, "Is that green, Mama?" So at least she is getting the message." -ScooterSister

21. "I just bought a laundry line so I can stop using the dryer in the warmer months." -SuburbanTomboy

22. "I try to grow everything I can so I do not have to buy produce in the grocery store. I grow things that can store easily like potatoes and carrots. A large garden can take a lot of work but the payoff is so great." -Sharon

23. "We buy organic regularly in many items and give preference to local produce when we can get it at our supermarket." -BlueSky

24. "I've been a vegetarian for 10 years. Being vegetarian can have a big environmental impact. Also, we eat organic and buy locally grown organic produce." -Kalalea

25. "I'm very good at recycling everything that I can. I unplug the big appliances like microwave, TV, lamps, etc when I'm not using them." -Iamgranola

26. "I bring my own bags when I go shopping everywhere, and happily explain to the checkout person why when they ask." -SuburbanTomboy

27. "I'm helping to grow most of the non meat foods (I've been a vegetarian for nine years) along with another girl. We also want to grow herbs to sell to restaurants in town." -neogirl710

28. "We use reusable shopping bags and keep them in the car, though I admit we forget them sometimes. I opt out of a bag when buying just one or two things that are easy to carry." -BlueSky

29. "I moved to a higher density area with some walkable amenities. And I try to use my job as an urban planner to shape more walkable, sustainable communities and push builders towards clustering new development to conserve more open space and farmland while still allowing for necessary growth." -SuburbanTomboy

30. "Our daughter is an architecture student and very interested in green building because we raised her to believe that is important." -NTxWriter

(End of Article)

This is an article from GAIAM Community.

Gaiam.com is a health-conscious, environmentally responsible lifestyle company whose goal is to bring LOHAS to the mainstream. Similarly a blog about politics might examine what weight environmental policy holds in the political arena.

Posts do not need to have any specific agenda, they simply need to relate to the larger issue in whatever way suits the blogger and readership. Our aim is not to promote one particular viewpoint, only to push the issue to the table for discussion.

- Commit to donating their day’s advertising earnings to an environmental charity of their choice. There is a list of "official" Blog Action Day charities on the site, however bloggers are also free to choose an alternate environmental charity to donate to if they wish.
And that’s it.

- If they choose bloggers can also promote the initiative itself.

However they are also free to simply post on topic on the right day or discreetly donate to a charity without publicizing Blog Action Day.

What to do next

Blogs of every variety from huge top 100 blogs to small, niche sites are going to be participating, find out who is involved.
